Judging Criteria

What will the judges be looking for?

Boy with guitarYou want to make a great film and we want you to too. Make sure you think about these things.

  • Is the film relevant to the theme of identity and diversity in New Zealand?
  • Are the ideas and messages clear?
  • How well does the visual and audio approach support the ideas and messages?
  • How well does the visual and audio quality support the content of the story?
  • Is the story original? Creative? Distinctive? Powerful? Challenging? Inspiring? Funny?
  • How well does the film use identity and diversity as part of the story telling?

Judges

Jess Feast
Independent Documentary Film Maker

Jess Feast’s first feature documentary ‘Cowboys & Communists’, has screened at several international festivals and won the 2007 Golden Key for best documentary at the Kassel Documentary Festival in Germany.
She has also directed; a segment for award winning arts programme, ‘The Living Room’, ‘Gather Round’, a one-hour documentary about one of New Zealand’s biggest music events and ‘Flight of the Conchords – A Texan Odyssey’ for TV3.
Jess has recently returned from China where she was documenting the journey of the Royal New Zealand Ballet for ‘Artsville’.

Zoe McIntosh
Independent Film Maker

Zoe McIntosh won Best Pitch at the 2007 DOCNZ pitch forum with producer, Costa Botes and has been selected to participate in the prestigious DOCUMART section of the Australian International Documentary Conference.
Zoe is a graduate of Canterbury University School of Fine Arts. Her documentary ‘Mail Order’ was selected for the Chicago International Film Festival, NZ Media Peace Awards and DOCNZ 06, where she was awarded special mention for Best Emerging Filmmaker.

David Rea
General Manger of the Ministry of Youth Development

David is the General Manager of the Ministry of Youth Development. He is a keen surfer and has a PhD in economics from Cambridge University.
